Songwriter and drummer Kory Kochersperger breaks down the recording of songs from the jam band’s new album, Not as Far

“Away.” “One of the few songs where the lyrics came first. I had an idea for the tempo and groove early on. The bridge section had a few different forms. This was one of the first songs we put down at Philadelphonic [Studio]. The female voice on the chorus was actually a last-minute shot in the dark that we turned out to really love. Very easy to sing along to, and the crowds have received it well since it’s been put in the setlist.”

“I Believe.” “Out of all the tracks on the album, this one took on the most changes from its conception. What’s special about this song is that we have Jacob Hemphill from Soldiers of Jah Army singing the third verse. They’re a reggae band we admire greatly. We also have a horn section from another amazing reggae band, John Brown’s Body. So we were appreciative and excited to have them be a part of our album. ‘I Believe’ turned out to be the longest track on the album [at just over five minutes]. It’s been our choice way to close the night.”

“Slow Down.” “The fastest song on the album. ‘Slow Down’ is all about capturing a memory through words. It’s a song about two people who care deeply for each other and who’ve run out of time together. The idea musically was up-tempo from the very beginning. We wanted a song that could help pick up our live show and really engage the crowd. Of late, ‘Slow Down’ has been the set opener and thus far done its job in getting people on their feet and dancing.”
